Can this tell me if a mushroom is safe to eat?

No, and it never will. No photo-based app can do that honestly. Identification of wild fungi often requires physical examination, spore prints, and habitat context that a photograph cannot supply, and several deadly species closely resemble edible ones. The app gives you a risk class and the dangerous look-alikes to check — a qualified mycologist or your local mycological society makes the actual call. If you or someone else has eaten a wild mushroom and may be unwell, contact emergency services or Poison Control immediately (US: 1-800-222-1222).

Why does it say "Unknown" so often?

That is deliberate. When the app is not confident enough to stand behind an identification, it says Unknown rather than guessing, and tells you what to photograph next. A confident wrong answer is far more dangerous here than an unhelpful one.

Why is my scan wrong?

AI identification from a single photo is probabilistic. Accuracy improves a lot when you capture the gills or underside and the base of the stem — a volva or bulb at the base is one of the key warning features for the most dangerous species. Use the capture mode picker to photograph each view.

Is safety information part of the paid plan?

No. Risk class and dangerous look-alike warnings appear on free scans exactly as they do for subscribers. A subscription buys unlimited scans, unlimited follow-up questions, and full history — never the warning.

How do I get more scans?

The free tier includes 3 scans. Upgrade to Premium ($7.99/month or $59.99/year with a 7-day free trial) for unlimited scans. Manage your subscription in Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions.

Why does the app ask for camera access?

The app needs the camera to photograph mushrooms for identification. You can also pick an existing photo from your library. Camera and photo library permissions can be changed in Settings → Mushroom Identifier at any time.

Do you record where I found it?

No. The app never collects your location, and GPS metadata is stripped from every photo on your device before it is uploaded. Foraging spots stay yours.

How do I restore my subscription?

Open the app, go to Settings → Restore Purchases. The app will re-check your Apple ID for active subscriptions.

How do I delete my data?

Scan history is stored locally on your device. Delete individual scans by swiping on them in the History screen. Uninstalling the app removes all local data. Server-side images are auto-deleted within 30 days of scanning.
